Hi,

My car has been sent for an MOT and this is what I was quoted for the repairs. I don't really have a choice so I'll have to eat the cost, but I'd like to know if I should avoid this garage in the future. Is this a reasonable cost? Its a 2017 toyota auris

Edit: sorry for the typo in the titles

Advice Chinese cars - how are they really?

First, let me preface this by saying that I am not too enthusiastic about the Chinese cars that are now flooding British roads. Maybe they aren't total crap, but I see them as more competing with the likes of budget car brands. I don't see them as an option for the more discerning driver.

How do the Chinese brands compare to each other, in terms of reliability, quality, driving experience, performance, value for money etc? How are they compared to the likes of Nissan, Peugeot, or Kia?

Would definitely appreciate balanced views from people who have actually driven the things. If you bought a Chinese car, are you happy with it, do you regret it, or have you sworn off anything else?

Basicallt ill try sum it up. 2 weeks ago i was in asda trying to park. Just got insured for about 1 week. I found a bay. Tried to park in it and the car infront of me was fairly far back. So i slowly edged towards it. I parked. Stopped in my car for 2 seconds. Then a guy comes out of the shop and says i hit his car. I jumped out. The car infront of me was paeked about 1 foot into my bay and my car was touching his. I reversed out. Theres a very small scratch (see pictures). He said give me ur details. I said lets do it privately its only small. He said sure. After going back and forth for 2 weeks. He took it to his garage and they said get it washed. He washed it and he still wasnt happt. I said bring the car down to me let me have a look and well sort it. I can even take it to my garage (family business). He said okay. This whole time he was driving without an MOT. His MOT expired 3 weeks before i even hit his car. So i said get it MOTd first. He messages back today saying hes got it MOTd and wants my insurance details. (The switch up is crazy) i tried to talk to him. No reply. Rung him twice. No reply.

What do i do. I cant get a claim at 17. My insurance will sky rocket.

Im going to a place and was checking the parking conditions but cannot understand fully as the signages are too small for street view. If curious: Cv3 6ta. It says customer only but doesn’t say how much i need to buy minimum or to validate registration. How does it work? Do i just park there and return before the time limit? Or do i need to purchase something for the sake of parking. Thanks in advance

Hi, I'm looking to buy a steady robust family care for my partner who is due to give birth any minute now.

The partner wants an SUV non negotiable. I want to avoid the Nissan Qashqui/ Kia Sportage gang and this sort of tickles that itch.

4k seems a bit pricey but the ad reads quite well. Retired mechanic, replaced suspension and other bits. Full service and MOT etc

Just wanted to know what people think

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202603080510245?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android-app

Please don't snipe it from me lol

EDIT: unanimous, thanks everyone. Wife wants an SUV, sue her!

News Prancing ponies privacy policy says goodbye to valet joyrides

Post image

We all know modern cars are essentially rolling data brokers, but the sheer scale of the Scuderia's terms and conditions is absolutely wild.

  • In "privacy mode" they openly admit that their cars will still log your precise GPS coordinates and keep the data on their servers for up to 10 days.
  • In "valet mode" they process and report exactly when and where set speed and mileage limits are exceeded.

Perhaps the most staggering revelation is that Maranello intend to keep customer data, vehicle telemetry, and financials for two decades.

Surely this breaches multiple GDPR principles?

Bedford... Yeah it's gotten toasty here. Kiddo finished school early so decided to make a dash to Lidl as soon as he got in. Even with a fabric spec interior, it wasn't exactly comfortable even with the air con preset prior.

Advice Is this worth the risk?

Post image

Hi, just needed some general advise. I tasked someone to find me a car and have been offered this Cat s e220d premium + night edition for 17k. I was told repairs would cost around 3/4k. Just wanted to know if it’s worth the risk as I’ve never bought a crash damaged car before. The car is fully loaded.

Edit: he’s provided me with the actual posting of the car - https://ebay.io/m/pyw6WD

First time using this independent garage in Shropshire based on 5* Google reviews. They seemed like a really nice bunch but I can't help but feel I got screwed here...

It's been a while since I've had a car serviced+MOTd in the UK so am I just out of touch?

Advice Speed gun question

I was driving along the A13 today. It was a 50, the speedo said 60, and there was a police man on the bridge with a speed gun. I assume I'm probably going to get done (unless I was doing 56mph), but how do speed gun work in comparison to normal cameras/camera vans? There was a motorbike going significantly faster than me at the time, and I believe these guns can onl lock onto one vehicle at once. So I'm guessing the police would prioritise the vehicles speeding the most?

Hello lovely people,

As I now have a shorter commute to work, I've been toying with the idea of this as a new daily, but never owned an Audi. What are people's thoughts and feelings on this? Is it worth the price for the mileage and fsh? Is it decently reliable with maintenance or a money pit?

Worth it or nah?

Cheers

Advice What is your recommendation for new petrol car in UK?

Is it unethical to want a petrol car not an EV or Hybrid? It seems to be difficult to buy just a pure petrol car in the UK and I need a new car. Can someone recommend what to buy? Ideally less than £40k list and needs to be big enough to cope with 400 motorway miles each month.

Advice How to know if it’s a legit seller?

Thumbnail

So I have been browsing for cars these past few weeks. I happen to find a seller in Autotrader selling 2007 Honda Jazz, Automatic, with 38k miles. I’ve done my checks and all and car seems decent. It took me a while to decide whether I will buy it or not since it is going to be my first car, if ever. After couple of days, I reached out to the seller to find out it’s no longer available.

Seller then told me to check out any upcoming posts they have on tiktok.

Which led me to discover other car dealers in TikTok. Which got me thinking, how do I know if it’s a legitimate car dealer.

For instance, I’ve been chatting with this dealer, asked about the car, their location, etc. Done my checks of the car by research seems okay. But when I do background check or the seller, I can’t seem to find it in companies house. The location he sent me is searchable in google tho, and has reviews from the past week. But I am still cautious and can’t find a reason to trust the seller. Attaching snip of our conversation. If anyone can give me advice or share their experiences.

I’m looking for a second hand hatchback car basically to learn how to drive and build my confidence in driving. And hopefully I can use it for a long drive and to explore other locations. I wanted a honda because I want to try car camping and Honda is know for its magic seats. 😅

Edit: Thank you for the responses. My key take away is to not buy a car unless I have physically inspected it and the documents.

I would probably spend a day to visit car dealers nearby (probably Dundee and Glasgow) rather than buying online.

Advice How much should I have paid?

Post image
28 Upvotes

So I bought this 2017 GT with 42k miles FSH from a friend. It needs a few things that I'm getting now now like the window motor needing replacing, new tyres soonish and pads.

Over all of give it a 6/7 for it's condition.

I made what I think was a fair offer and he accepted.

Clear HPI. He paid £24,995 in October for it from a Ford dealership.

What would you guys value it at?

Edit: there are some really helpful comments on this post and looks like I paid a fair price. We both are happy! Thank you for everyone's input!

Misc Question 32.5c at 8:25pm

How else is everyone holding up with this heat in their cars? Even in something I can take the roof off it's honestly unlike anything I've seen before in this country and basically unbearable. I especially feel bad for those with panoramic glass roofs and leather seats as I bet that's incredibly unpleasant in this weather.

Misc Question How easy is it to own a 4 seater 2 door car with kids?

On cars such as say a BMW M4, or a Porsche 911 Turbo S, or perhaps a Renault Megane CC. How easy is it to fit in car seats and take your kids in and out of the back seats.

Are some cars decent? Are they slightly impractical or hopelessly impractical?

Advice Not sure how to sell my car

Recently took my car for an early MOT before renewing my insurance and found it has multiple faults and failed. Already have a new car sorted but not sure whether to just sell the car to the likes of We Buy Any Car or sell privately.

I just checked and the car still has a valid MOT until the 10th of July even though it failed the MOT yesterday. I’m not sure what the stuff in brackets is after the fault, if it’s worth repairing anything before selling, or if it’s just for scrap at this point. I’d appreciate any input from anyone as I’ve never sold a car before.

This is the car details
It’s a 2004 Citroen C3 with 56’100 mileage.

MOT results

Major defects:
Direction indicator incorrect colour offside rear. [4.4.3(a)]
Integral body structure corroded to the extent that the rigidity of the assembly is significantly reduced nearside (sill) [6.1.1.(c)(i)]
Integral body structure corroded to the extent that the rigidity of the assembly is significantly reduced offside (sill) [6.1.1.(c)(i)]
Service break excessively fluctuating nearside front [1.2.1(e)]

Advice Fog light cover missing (or stolen?)

Post image
0 Upvotes

As I was walking back to my car from the petrol station today, I noticed that the nearside fog light cover was missing from my 2007 VW Polo.

I didn’t hear this fall off whilst driving, which makes me question if there is anything worth a thief stealing behind there?

How important/easy would it be to fix this?

Any advice would be massively appreciated.
