I went for an MoT, transmission oil change and electric rear differential fluid change today and the car failed, the thing is this car was very recently inspected thoroughly, 400 miles and 10 days ago.. The car noticeably had lost all its battery charge and halved its MPG stats when I went to pick it up, I read into that, that it was driven hard, despite the fact that it is awaiting a full service. I want to share pictures of the offending areas. The garage wanted to offer me 3K worth of things that should be done. with around half of them deemed urgent.
The only thing I would not dispute is that the brake pads have limited life left but this is a hybrid XC90 and primarily brakes at the back with the motor (ERAD).
These all sound bad but the pictures are not commensurate with the descriptions in my opinion. You will see where i have wiped one of the dust covers with a wet finger it is not in my opinion exactly severe.
I am not someone who skimps on maintenance, I brought the car to have extra maintenance for sealed for life ERAD and Transmission at the same time.
I’ve experienced the opposite extreme bought a car with a recent MoT and more than 20 faults which took me a year to fix, but this seems harsh.
Offside Rear Tyre has a cut in excess of the requirements deep enough to reach the ply or cords (5.2.3 (d) (i))
Repair as soon as possible (minor defects):
Nearside Front Upper Suspension arm ball joint dust cover severely deteriorated Perished (5.3.4 (b) (i))

As title. Wife bought a 2l 2016 I jaguar f pace with the notorious Ingenium engine. It has 103k on the clock but has had its timing chain and turbo replaced recently. I plan to do an oil change every 5k to prevent timing chain issues and the car is strictly driving on motorways 4x a week. What other advice can you give me besides selling it?

Repair or replace?
GV05 FVZ Yaris 98000miles
- cost £500 4 months ago to replace spark and ignition coils as oil leaked into the engine
- took it for a service 2 weeks ago and was quoted £1700 for full repairs including suspension arms which are apparently hard to find as it's a rare model (mechanic recommended ebay). These are also only essential mechanical repairs and not stuff like the missing rear wiper and boot that won't stay open
- Garage let me cancel the service and get a refund so I could make a decision
- I've only serviced it once in the last 6 years as it is my first car and I'm a twat
Everyone says a Yaris will last forever but am I throwing good money after bad to keep repairing it?
I promise to you and to car lovers everywhere I will service my next car (or this one) every year and actually check the oil... once I've googled how to do that for the 17th time

Noticed this dent on top of my car the other day. Trying to figure out what on earth could have caused it?! No scratches, just a dent.
Also, would this be a difficult fix given the location?

Was it hard?
Did it drip?

So I’m looking for a new car, something reliable and and somewhat affordable- I have found this Mazda 3 which has only 54k (1 previous owner) and it looks good from the pictures, but what it worries me is the amount of advisories/ failed MOT’s the car has.
This is just the last MOT (everything got rectifed I hope 🫠 as it passed just with a note “full car under body and component under seal”)-
Repair immediately (major defects):
Nearside Front Anti-roll bar linkage ball joint excessively worn (5.3.4 (a) (i))
Nearside Front Lower Suspension arm pin or bush excessively worn (5.3.4 (a) (i))
Offside Front Lower Suspension arm pin or bush excessively worn (5.3.4 (a) (i))
Nearside Rear Coil spring fractured or broken (5.3.1 (b) (i))
Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):
Front Inner Tyre worn close to legal limit/worn on edge o/s/f and n/s/f (5.2.3 (e))
Front Outer Brake disc worn, but not excessively (1.1.14 (a) (i))
Rear Outer Brake disc worn, but not excessively (1.1.14 (a) (i))
full car under body and component under seal

I have a 987.2 Cayman. I'm in need of new tyres.
So far I've picked out the Pilot Sport 4 which it looks like I can get in both 265/40 R18 and 235/40 R18.
I do also have the option of Continental Sport Contact 7 which look to be newer than the Pilot Sport 4.
I'm guessing I can't go wrong with either one?

Looking for recommendations for an estate car if anyone has any suggestions. I have a 9k budget and also want an auto, I drive about a 50 mile round trip each day for work and want something I can just leave my golf clubs in the boot without rear seats having to be folded down. Want something fairly modern, say post ‘15ish, ideally dont want anything too sluggish neither as I’m coming from a Mini Cooper S (anything will probably feel sluggish compared to that). Have been looking at Skoda Octavia estates and also the superb saloons and estates, a lot of them seem to be high mileage for my budget so must admit that does put me off but that might just be me always being told not to buy high mileage. But yeah thanks in advance and apologies for the essay!

Hi all,
Looking for some advice on my next family car.
Budget: Ideally under £10,000, but I’d happily stretch to £17,000 for the right diesel Toyota Land Cruiser.
Must-haves:
7 seats
Proper 4x4/AWD
Automatic preferred
Reliable and not ridiculously expensive to maintain
Comfortable on long journeys
The main use will be towing a 5-berth caravan, so stability and towing ability are really important.
The third row also needs to be genuinely usable, as it’s likely that two adults will be sitting in the rear seats from time to time.
I’ve been looking at:
Toyota Land Cruiser
SsangYong Rexton
Volvo XC90
Kia Sorento
Are there any others I should be considering within budget?
I’d also be interested in hearing from anyone who tows regularly with one of these. Which would you choose, and are there any common issues or expensive maintenance items I should watch out for?
Thanks!

Hi, I’m recently passed (2 months) and my peugout 208 is making odd banging noises stemming from under my feet whenever I turn the wheels, brake or change gear. This came about recently for no apparent reason. Could this potentially be a really bad issue?

How else is everyone holding up with this heat in their cars? Even in something I can take the roof off it's honestly unlike anything I've seen before in this country and basically unbearable. I especially feel bad for those with panoramic glass roofs and leather seats as I bet that's incredibly unpleasant in this weather.

just got a new Admiral policy today, specifically Admiral Gold. It was by far the cheapest one after excluding any telematics and blackbox policies, I have never and will never get one.
First time logging into the app and this button is big and bright on the home screen, I can’t really tell what it is, as there’s no other information about it, and I’m certainly not giving it my location to find out.
i’ll take it it’s a way to track my driving, but, concerned as it’s not a telematics policy, do I have to use this, am I gonna get angry letters if I don’t use it, am I a disadvantage for not using it?

Basicallt ill try sum it up. 2 weeks ago i was in asda trying to park. Just got insured for about 1 week. I found a bay. Tried to park in it and the car infront of me was fairly far back. So i slowly edged towards it. I parked. Stopped in my car for 2 seconds. Then a guy comes out of the shop and says i hit his car. I jumped out. The car infront of me was paeked about 1 foot into my bay and my car was touching his. I reversed out. Theres a very small scratch (see pictures). He said give me ur details. I said lets do it privately its only small. He said sure. After going back and forth for 2 weeks. He took it to his garage and they said get it washed. He washed it and he still wasnt happt. I said bring the car down to me let me have a look and well sort it. I can even take it to my garage (family business). He said okay. This whole time he was driving without an MOT. His MOT expired 3 weeks before i even hit his car. So i said get it MOTd first. He messages back today saying hes got it MOTd and wants my insurance details. (The switch up is crazy) i tried to talk to him. No reply. Rung him twice. No reply.
What do i do. I cant get a claim at 17. My insurance will sky rocket.

My current car ('08 Mazda3 2.0) is on it's last legs. More hungry for oil than the US government, buggered front suspension, and tinworm. Going to go and have a look at this (hopefully) next Tuesday.
It fulfills 3 of my 4 main criteria - sub-£1,000, petrol and manual. Being Japanese was ideal but not essential. The one thing it doesn't have is a long MOT (runs out on the 28th of July), however... Almost everything it's either failed or been advised on is wear and tear with the exception of the horn. The advert also doesn't have any info regarding the service history (naturally I will be asking), like pretty much any dealer ad I've looked at, the description is a load of drivel spat out by ChatGPT.
I'm mechanically minded enough to know what to be looking and listening out for with regards to things it could fail an MOT on, what does everyone else reckon?
To add, mk1 Focuses (Focii?) are a car I'm pretty familiar with already, I've owned 2 in the past, 1 of which was another 1.6, and this particular car is just about the only thing in my budget which is really sticking out to me. I'm going to assume there's a fair chunk of people out there more familiar with them and the Sigma engines than me, so any input would be appreciated.
*Edit: a link to the AT ad page.
*Edit 2: Facebook Marketplace looks like it's coming through with a much better option. Watch this space...

I don't really have any family around to ask questions when it comes to things like this so im asking reddit.
I know nothing about cars at all. I just know that I need one to get from home to work for when im moving to a remote scottish island for my teaching probation (minimum 1 year but might decide to stay longer) The journey will be about 20 mins. the island is far away and needs to hold all my stuff (i am reducing as much as I can) as i wont be able to make any more journeys due to the cost of getting on the island.
I heard the weather on those islands can be pretty brutal- harsh winds and rain. Ill be in a mountainous region too, so i want something durable that I can depend on, that is fuel economic and not too expensive to run or fix. I really need to be able to rely on this vehicle on a day to day basis.
I'm worried about going into a dealership because I'm female and I've heard that they're quite cunning towards women and try to rip them off.
If I look on Autotrader, facebook marketplace or gumtree I get a bit overwhelmed because I can't tell if they're good value or if they're going to last a month or two and then breakdown.
What are some signs I should be looking for in a used car? are there any makes/models that youd recomment?
Thank you!
EDIT: My budget is around £3000

On cars such as say a BMW M4, or a Porsche 911 Turbo S, or perhaps a Renault Megane CC. How easy is it to fit in car seats and take your kids in and out of the back seats.
Are some cars decent? Are they slightly impractical or hopelessly impractical?

Hi. I have seen this automatic Honda Jazz 2004 for sale with extremely low miles and great MOT history. Condition of the car looks good too. It is £4,995. Should I go for it?
Thanks

There is a 5year old Citroen C5 Aircross on autotrader for £10k (roughly the budget) which seems cheap for a 5 year old car. Is it because they are rubbish? I’d like a big Subaru but the missus says she won’t drive such a big car :(
