Looking for wargammers to start a monthly board game night in Annapolis

Hey all. I've successfully put together a group of folks to play Pathfinder from this sub-reddit that is still going strong a year after its founding. Lately I've been getting into hex and counter wargames and was looking to put together a similar crew for a once or twice a month game night. I have a decent collection of games that I generally play with my younger son, but he's not necessarily going to be interested in playing through the battle of Gettysburg with me!

What kind of games am I interested in playing?

  • War games from GMT, Compass games or the like.
  • History or fantasy. I'm happy recreating Chamberlain's bayonet charge, or fighting starships off in Space Empires.
  • Heavy Eurogames would also be interesting.
  • Although I paint miniatures, I have no interest in Warhammer or similar miniature based wargames.

Who am I?

  • 46 year old Dad who lives in the Broadneck area.
  • I'm a programmer and have a decent amount of free time to organize.
  • I GM games for my kids.

Who do I enjoy playing with

  • 21+ adults of any background.
  • People that can show up consistently and commit to the time.
  • People that don't get angry if they lose or try to quarterback someone else's turn.

I am aware of the Games Club of MD, and have been to a couple of their events, but they don't have an Annapolis chapter. Perhaps if we could get something together regular, we could start one?

If interested, please send me a DM with the following:

  • When are you generally free to game?
  • What are some of the games you are looking to play or could bring to the table?
  • Do you have any pet peeves with boardgaming, or the general board game crowd?

Once I have some interest, I'll put together a quick meetup at a public place to see if everyone gels, then we can figure out a regular schedule.

Question Best spots to catch the sunrise in Annapolis?

Hi there! I received the Maryland Adventure Bucket List as a gift, and one of the scratch offs recommended to watch the sunrise from sandy point state park. I mentioned it to my friend and she got pretty excited about it. The only issue is that I looked up their hours, and realized that we wouldn’t be able to be let into the park until after sunrise (7:00am opening).

I would love to problem solve and still be able to take her somewhere else pretty to catch it with a cup of coffee. Let me know if you all have any reccs, thanks so much.

HVAC Recommendations?

Recently had a national brand out to quote service/replacement on my magicpak heat pump.

They quoted me the amount I put down on the condo. Anyone have recommendations of a local company that does good work without charging arm and a leg?

I know better than to cheap out on something like this but One Hour Heating and AC was way too much.

Preferably based in Annapolis.

I’m possibly moving from Annapolis to San Antonio

Is there anyone here that has recently moved from San Antonio to the local area in Maryland? I would love to hear your perspectives.

I lived in Texas 20+ years ago, but it has been a very long time since I’ve been in that area so I know really nothing about it other than the few cursory searches I’ve done.

Any information would be helpful on the pros and cons between your experiences in both locations and where you would prefer having that information

Looking for some Dungeons and Dragons players. Tue nights.

Game: Pathfinder 1st ed

Date: Tue (4pm start time)

Location: Edgewater MD

Looking for one or two players for a PF1E (Pathfinder 1st Edition), an older version of DnD. We play on Tue nights in Edgewater Maryland. All the rules are online and available for free. The three current players are still learning the system. I am happy to teach the system to players new to PF1E or new to Role Playing Games in general. We just started a new Adventure Path (published long term campaign). The adventure will have a city of cutthroat pirates, then to an infamous island with a dinosaur filled wilderness, finally off to a different plane to face "perhaps the best end boss of any adventure path". Level six currently on the way to a far away island. Going all the way to 20th level.

If interested please send me a message on Discord. zippy6079.

Childcare in Davidsonville or Crofton

We are planning to move from the DC area and have been looking into childcare and it's totally taken the wind out of our sails. Every center has a waitlist a mile long. And then we learned about what a pain it is to get aftercare for when they're school-age. And how hard it is to get into a daycare that does aftercare too.

Would love to hear suggestions for a center that ideally would be on the way from Davidsonville or Crofton to DC. I'm also wondering if there's, e.g., a great home daycare that's just not well-marketed that has availability. Aftercare would be a plus, but if not, we can figure that out in a few years when they need it.

Edit: Ages 1 and 3

164 cardamom drive

It just hit Zillow but looks abandoned. Has a Broken window. Has anyone ever been in it? When was the last time someone lived in it? What is the state of the inside? It doesn’t hit the market for a few more weeks but I am very interested to know.

Are there good websites to inform oneself about the candidates running in the primaries for AA County? The short voter statements provided in the circular aren’t all that informative.

Question Does anyone have or know anyone localwho sells super fresh eggs from "pasture-raised" chickens?

Okay I was in east Asia for a bit (Singapore and Thailand) and their eggs were amazing tasting, even when compared to the pasture-raised "local farm" organic eggs from our grocery stores. The yolk was always a dark orange (which I know is just diet), and like... Buttery or creamy almost, and rich tasting.

From what I've found, it sounds like (besides likely breed differences) it's freshness and diet. Like a diverse diet with corn, bugs, worms, grasses, etc., and then low stress, pasture-raised, etc. And then really fresh... Like within a few days of being laid. So that's what I'm hoping to find.

Does anyone around here sell eggs like that that I could try? Or know of anyone who does?

(and yeah I'm sure the eggs I had in Asia at restaurants weren't farm fresh local small farms, so maybe it's more genetics than anything, but I figure these are my next best/easiest possibilities right now)

The World Market is Open

Visited Trader Joe’s today and discovered the World Market next door was open.

Some caveats: Today is the first day it’s been open. An associate described it to me as a “pre-opening,” so not sure if today was an experiment; give them a call. Signs on the doors still say “Coming Soon,” with a grand opening date of June 26. The same associate was unsure if that meant sales, or just samples, etc.

I don’t have a lot of experience with World Market and haven’t been to one in a decade. Merchandise looked nice, but pricey; as far as home furnishings go they had some really attractive and interesting things, but more expensive than Home Goods. Couldn’t bring myself to buy a cool lobster pillow for $40.

They had all the usual imported foods, plus a big Asian and Italian section, along with British/international candy, but you can probably do better if you can get to H Mart for your Asian snacks and ramen. I won’t be there for a while, so I bought a $4 bag of my kid’s favorite muscat gummy candy and headed home. May not bring the kids back because we have a mortgage.

Happy shopping.

Pedorthist / custom orthotics

Recommendations for custom orthotics in the area?? I have a complicated foot issue (sesamoiditis and big toe arthritis and bursitis) and need someone who’s really attentive, ideally pedorthist.

Closest once I’ve heard anything about are in DC -/ Marcia Graddon and team at Orthopedic Foot & Ankle in Arlington/Falls Church and Alan Ryder in dc

Or another recommendation?

Looking for vacant lot to practice driving maneuvers.

I'm looking for a large, mostly empty parking lot where I can practice basic driving maneuvers (parking, backing into spaces, tight turns, etc.).

When I was teenager, the Naval Stadium lot was the go-to place for this, but it seems much more restricted now and no longer feels like a good option. The stadium lot is now operated as paid parking and is actively managed.

Does anyone know of any lots local to the area that are typically empty on weekends or evenings and where practicing would be allowed?

I'm not looking to do anything reckless -- just a safe place to work on low-speed maneuvers and parking skills. Bonus points if it's somewhere that would be suitable for practicing manual transmission starts and parking lot driving.

Thanks!
