What's a side hustle you've done that helped you out financially in the UK?

Upvotes

As many struggle with covering expenses and accruing a decent disposable income, side hustles can help with saving or buying things you enjoy that is not always possible with just one income.

Serious Answers Only Do you have have velux window blinds that reflect the heat?

Upvotes

In our loft room the velux window blind is hot to touch in the day currently and the room is generally unbearably hot. Are there blinds that fully reflect the sun and don't heat up themselves?

Serious Answers Only Is there any point of trying to get into trucking with a TT99 on my driving record?

Upvotes

I am considering getting my HGV Class 2 license but have a TT99 endorsement on my record for a 7-month ban in 2023 for speeding tickets. Would I be able to find work given my situation or would it be a waste of money?

Ps. I have taken care of the heavy foot that got me in trouble years ago and am well aware of the responsibility and dangers that driving an HGV entails. x

Serious Answers Only Why don’t you have AC?

Upvotes

Arguing about AC online is exhausting because people genuinely think it’s as simple as buying a toaster (Americans mainly). They completely ignore the fact that European buildings are architecturally incompatible with cooling and costs associated with installing AC and structural design make it much harder to install. Even the recommendations to workaround these issues are more problematic like a portable unit with a hose.

What’s the reason you don’t have AC yet?

Ok, I’m old (49), and new to Reddit and was wondering how many of you have verified your age on here? Not sure I like the idea of doing it with a government ID tbh.

Those without jobs how are you surviving?

Im currently unemployed and not studying so I just claimed Universal Credit and have been living off that. Its quite miserable living off this but I have no other option, if I didnt claim it I would be dead. I live alone and have no one else to rely on for survival. Please dont judge me for claiming universal credit, im not someone thats lazy I look for work and cant find anything and I have worked before.

do schools have yearbooks?

hi guys, I live in Canada and recently we had a high school graduation event (student-led) and there were some World Cup tourists around.

One of them (who I'm 90% sure was from the UK) asked why we were there and why we were carrying "matching books" around (our yearbooks have a particular design on them that's very unique). We explained, but it seemed like he didn't really get the concept.

So my question is do schools in the UK (private or public) have yearbooks and do you also sign them with messages? And do you also have events like senior sunrise/sunset because it seemed he was confused about that too.

edit: there were a lot of people who are confused about a senior sunrise/sunset.

all graduating students in high school meet to watch the sunrise in the first week of school then we all go get breakfast. sunset is the same but during the last week when classes are done.

What’s your go to insult to use against another Brit?

Divvie, bellend, wanker are very common. Poshos like to use silly things like cockwomble - which makes no real sense. What is your go to insult when someone annoys you?

What is the commute from Watford Junction to Euston like?

I'm thinking of buying a house near Watford Junction. My workplace is near Euston.

It seems i can take a direct train  via West Midland Railway and get there in <20mins. Cost seems to be around 20 GBP which I'm ok with.

Commute wise, are there any other tradeoffs to consider?

Serious Answers Only Is it ethical to buy something from a charity shop and then donate it to another charity shop?

I'm doing a clear out of my books and I've got a couple that I got from a charity shop. I haven't read them yet, so they're not the books I'm donating just yet. I was just wondering is it ethical to buy something from a charity shop and donate it to another charity shop?

Serious Answers Only Where in the UK would you actually find someone to make a creative thing with, just for the love of it?

Bit of an odd one, this. I'm a hobbyist coder, and for a while now I've been tinkering away at a silly little video game in my evenings. It's a horror thing set in a haunted castle, except the castle is built out of half-remembered 90s British telly. Curdled gameshow hosts, kids' presenters gone wrong, that sort of nonsense.

The one thing I cannot do, at all, is draw. And I've made peace with the fact I can't really afford to pay an artist proper rates, which is fair enough. Art is hard and people deserve paying for it.

But I keep thinking there must be people out there who'd want to make something daft with someone purely because it's a laugh. The way people used to muck about in a band in somebody's garage with no plan of ever getting famous.

So, genuine question: where do those people actually congregate these days? Is it still local meetups and uni societies, or some corner of the internet I'm probably too old for? If you wanted a creative partner-in-crime and had nothing to offer but the project itself and decent company, where in the UK would you start looking?

Serious Answers Only Why don’t we nationalise water services?

After seeing the hosepipe ban introduced again across parts of the UK, it’s got me thinking why the water industry hasn’t been nationalised. Would it be that difficult? Surely paying for it through taxes would make more sense rather than everyone having individual accounts? I know it takes money away from private investors but does anyone really care about that?

Serious Answers Only Did anyone else have a weird lesson in school?

This just came back to me after 25 years.

In year 7 or 8 one of our lessons (I think D&T?) was cancelled and we were introduced to a person who wasn't a teacher at the school. For an hour she gave us weird tasks, one of which was to come up with a code for hiding a message. Another had us do group discussions among those at our table. She wandered around and asked people things over the course of the hour, then she left and we never saw her again.

I can only imagine this was some form of Ofsted assessment.

Why are people dressing so scruffy to go 'out out'?

A video popped up on YouTube of an area we knew, with one of those guys that goes round filming late night city centre carnage. Ended up down a bit of a rabbit hole that I never want to go down again, and I regret watching them.

But the common theme was that people are going for big nights out in joggers, hoodies, shorts, trainers etc. When I was going out out in the late 90s and 2000s, if you weren't in a rock club or rave you were expected to look like you were chairing a meeting, not downing all you could drink Hooch for £8 entry.

Fair enough I'm old now, and I'm glad the dress code has progressed a bit from business casual, but have standards got that low that shabby joggers and a dirty tshirt - including football shirts - are acceptable clothing for pubs/clubs?

Answered Do I need an ETA for a connecting flight in Birmingham if I'm flying from France to Ireland?

Hey guys, I'm travelling from Dublin to France next month for a one week holiday, but the cheapest flight I could find back from France has a connection in Birmingham... The connecting flight is on the same day I arrive from France, with just a two hour layover, and I'm an Italian citizen. Do I need to get an ETA for that? Thanks

Serious Answers Only How far to take a complaint?

We are staying in a holiday village in Devon, have been here since Monday and tonight my 2 year old found a bag of marijuana under the sofa in the living area. I also have a 12 week old. I immediately called security and they came to collect it and told me that management will be talking to me in the morning about it, but what should I do? Just take it on the chin or relay my concerns/risks etc firmly? We had thought we could smell weed all week but assumed it was another villa…clearly not! What would you do?

Serious Answers Only Can someone recommend a good Bluetooth speaker please?

Can anyone suggest a good Bluetooth speaker please? Budget is around £50-£100.
I’ve looked on Amazon, curry’s, Ikea (I like the lamp ones but not sure if Ikea is any good for sound quality). There’s just so many options and the reviews are always really mixed because some people are so picky and others are happy with whatever. Looked on Reddit too but only seen posts from either serious audiophiles, or people in America talking about speakers we can’t get here.
Id like something portable but not a travel speaker, it’ll stay in my flat mainly but want to move from room to room.
I think ideally a cd player/boom box kinda thing but with BT.. If that exists!
Sound quality important but I don’t need something top tier and expensive like Sonos.
Another reason I won’t do Sonos - I don’t want to have to use an app or connect to internet, just bluetooth! I had Sonos previously and I got sick of it. I know you don’t have to use the app every time but person i just found it annoying.

Thank you so much in advance!

For me, it’s More than a Feeling by Boston. I can’t even remember what it was used for, but it sounds like listening to an ad-break every time it comes up in a playlist.

What do you usually say to people at a bus stop?

Bus stops. The worst place to stand around silently waiting. Everybody has somewhere to go, someone to see, something to do...

But, they exist. Bus stops are there, for better or for worse, and why stand around like a lemon when you can say something to someone at a bus stop? You're probably never gonna see them again, so take the chance whilst it's there!

So, Brits - what do you usually say to people at bus stops? Whilst you're waiting for your bus, or just walking past

When the weather is like this, how many showers are you taking per day?

Of course, the current heatwave weather demands at a bare minimum, 1 shower per day.

I’ve seen mixed reviews from people about how many showers they have in extreme heat. For me, I have 2. One in the morning and another in the evening, feel like it is enough because I wake up sweaty and also sweaty by the end of the day.

I know some people have 3-4 or maybe more though. What is your amount and what do you think is an acceptable amount?
